Youth Conduct Multi-year Eelgrass Research Project
The Grade Five classes at Arrowview Elementary School, in Qualicum Beach, have been conducting a multi-year research project for the last 3 years. They have been mapping and comparing the growth rates of the natural eelgrass, marina (say MAR-ih-nah), to the introduced japonica (say ja-PAH-nica).

Our Junior Streamkeepers program is designed to give students the experience of being in the outdoors on the banks of their rivers and creeks and appreciate the wonder of nature first hand. It is also a course that benefits those students raising salmon eggs in the classroom providing a hands-on look at where their salmon live.

A storm drain collects rain and melted snow that runs off hard surfaces such as roads,roofs,parking lots and driveways. They empty into underground storm sewer systems. Many of these storm sewers discharge their contents directly into local waters, which are important for recreational activities, as well as habitat for fish and other aquatic wildlife.
